Film translation – craft and art

With the exception of translation for dubbing, film translation is like translating within a corset: it is limited by time. Yet the corset is laced completely differently depending on the type of film translation.

In short: not all film translation is the same.

Each different area is a craft in its own right, with its own guidelines, special features, requirements and challenges.

For example, subtitling for hearing audiences follows different rules than SDH/HoH subtitling  (subtitling for the deaf and hard of hearing), and voice-over translation requires different considerations than subtitling.

An overview of the different areas of film translation and their special features can be found here.
