About us

AVÜ e.V. (AudioVisuelle Übersetzer*innen – AVÜ e.V.) is a professional association representing the interests of all freelance and employed audiovisual translators, which has its roots in the “Untertitelforum”, an initiative launched in May 2011. The association was established in February 2016 during the Berlinale. Our members work in all areas of film translation: interlingual and SDH subtitling, audio description, and voiceover and dubbing translation. AVÜ is part of an international network of subtitlers and is a member of AVTE, the European umbrella organization for audiovisual translators, as well as Initiative Urheberrecht, the German authors' rights initiative, and Initiative Fair Film. As the only official alliance of audiovisual translators in Germany, AVÜ aims to give a voice to our colleagues and be the first port of call for both film professionals and film lovers interested in learning more about our profession.

Our goals

• to ensure better working conditions and fair payment that reflects our skills and experience, putting a stop to the persistent fall in rates over the last 15 years
• to safeguard high standards and implement specific quality guidelines in the field of subtitling
• to react to major changes in our industry in a constructive manner and address new challenges, such as the devaluation and de-professionalization of our trade and the issues of artificial intelligence and machine translation
• to raise the profile of our profession and create an understanding for the skills it involves within the film industry, among film lovers and beyond.
